How do I transfer a domain to Nameway®? How do I create a domain name transfer order?

To transfer a domain name from your current registrar over to Nameway® follow the instructions listed below.

Log into your Nameway® account.
Click on "domain names".
Click on "transfers".

Select the transfer process which best fits your needs and click "next".
Auto Verification - NOT for use with EPP domains: .info, .biz, .us, .org, and .cn
Fax - NOT for use with .info, .biz, .us, .org, and .cn
EPP - This is for .info, .biz, .us, .org, and .cn domains ONLY. This requires an authorization key which you obtain from the current registrar.

In the text field enter in the domains that you wish to transfer to Nameway® (to prevent the interface from timing out it is best to not exceed 200 domains on any one transfer order). Using the check boxes provided, select which options that you would like to apply to the domains on your transfer order.

Registrar Lock (prevents your domain from being transferred away from Nameway® and you can remove at any time).
Auto Renew (attempts to automatically renew your domain 30 days prior to expiration.)
Apply Whois info (automatically retains current whois information.) If you do not select this option, your account (billing) information will replace the current whois information when the domain transfers.

If you used either the "fax" or "auto verification" transfer options you will be asked to submit the transfer order. If you are satisfied with your order, click the "submit" button.

If you used the "EPP" transfer option you will be required to enter in the authorization key for each domain name in the order before you can submit the request. You will obtain this data from the current registrar.

Some registrars have names locked against transfers that must be removed before a request can be submitted and some may send a verification email to verify the transfer away. You must acknowledge their emails or they will decline the transfer.

What is involved in transferring a domain?

In order to transfer a domain name from one registrar to another, you will need to follow the transfer procedures of the gaining registrar (the registrar the you are transferring to).You will be required by the gaining registrar to verify the request to ensure it is legitimate and that you are the rightful owner. Once the transfer request has been verified, the gaining registrar will submit the transfer request to Verisign Global Registry.

Once a transfer request has been submitted to Verisign, the current registrar for the name will receive notification of the request. The Global Registry will allow the current registrar up to 5 business days in which to approve or decline the transfer request. You may or may not receive verification material from the current registrar.

Each registrar has their own policies concerning transfers away to another registrar. It is a good idea to contact your current registrar in order to make yourself familiar with thier policies in order to avoid potential delays. Some registrars have names locked against transfers that must be removed before a request can be submitted and some may send a verification email to verify the transfer away.

My email address is wrong, can I still request a transfer? Can I use the FAX transfer option?

Yes - When creating a transfer request you have 3 options through our interface, one of which is the "fax" method which does not require an email. However, if your current registrar sends an email for your verification, you will have to update your email address with that registrar, or they will not approve the transfer.

FAX BENEFITS: This method offers the convenience of being able to verify many domain names on one order without having to reply to a verification email from Nameway® for each name. This transfer option would be used for large orders where all of the domain names were registered to the same individual/organization.

This is also used if the email address of your registrant and/or administrative contact is outdated. Please keep in mind, some registrars will still send an email confirmation when transferring away, so please check with your current registrar for their policy on emails.

When a fax transfer order is created our interface will provide fields for the current registrant contact info to be entered into our system (this is the information that our system will check against the current whois output, so it must be valid).

Our system will automatically generate a fax form once the transfer order is submitted to our database. The fax form will contain your transfer order reference number, a list of all domains included on the order and an area provided for the signature of the registrant contact. Once the registrant has signed the order, fax it to Nameway® (the number is on the form).

You may check the status of your transfer orders at any time by clicking "domain names, my transfers", located in the navigation menu on the left hand side of the web page. Click on the actual transfer order number link. This will open the transfer and display all domains on the order, and the unique status of each domain name.

What is the Auto Verification transfer option? Where do you send the transfer authorization email?

When creating a transfer request you have three options through our interface, one of which is the "auto verification" method. The auto verification streamlines the transfer process by verifying your transfer request via email, rather than sending in a signed fax.

When an auto verification transfer order is created, our system will collect the whois information from the current registrar and send an email to each of the authorized contacts. All four contacts will receive a verification email that contains a link to our transfer approval page. On the transfer approval page you will have the option to either approve or decline the request to transfer your domain name to Nameway®.

Only one response it needed in order to verify the request (only one of the contacts needs to reply to the verification email - you can ignore the others if you are the same recipient).

NOTE: This method cannot be used for .info, .biz, .us, .org, and .cn domains. You must use the EPP option.

Which domains can be transferred?

You can transfer, .com, .net, .org, .cc, .info, .biz, .us and .cn domains.
Currently the other TLDs are not available to transfer. Some are due to restrictions by the registry, and others we have not developed the interface to do so. We do not have any timelines available, but will post on the Home/Message Center of the Support Center when we add more in the future.
To transfer a domain, log into your account, click on domain names, transfers.
There are three options:

Auto verification (Use for .com, .net, or .cc domains only)
This is our paperless transfer system. For EACH domain on the request, we will e-mail the current domain registrant contacts for authorization.
For large quantities of domains with the same registrant, a single page FAX may be an easier option rather than sending a reply to multiple emails.
Fax (Use for .com, .net, or .cc domains only).

This transfer type requires you to fax us a signed authorization letter. The authorization letter will be available for you to print upon order submission. All domains in a single fax order must have the same Registrant.
EPP transfers (.info, .biz .org, .cn and .us only). This transfer type requires you to enter the current authorization key for each domain. No further verification (such as fax or auto verification) is required for these domains.

Authorization keys are obtained from the current registrar.
You can come back to the domain names, my transfer menu option to check the status at any time.

What does EPP transfer option mean?

This is for .org, .info, .biz, .us, .org, and .cn domains only. When creating a transfer request you have 3 options through our interface, one of which is the "EPP" method. This method is used to verify your .info, .biz, .us, .org, and .cn domains only. This may change at any time depending upon registry requirements.

When an EPP transfer order is created our system will require an "authorization key" for each domain name is entered into our system. You must contact your current registrar for this key. This authorization key removes the need for the user to send in a fax or reply to an email to verify their transfer request. This is because these names are assigned a unique authorization key at the time of their registration. The key is created and held with your current registrar. You should be able to obtain your authorization key by contacting your current registrar.

Can we transfer .co.uk domains? Can we just change the IPS tag?

We are unable to accept .co.uk domain transfers at this time. Please do not change the tag with the registry, as we do not have order processing or transfer programs set up for this TLD.

Additional information will be posted on the HOME page of the Support Center as it becomes available.

Why wasn't an extra year added to my domain's registration period when I transferred it to Nameway®?

If a domain is transferred less than 45 days after it has expired and been reactivated, the extra year will not be added. This is a technical limitation put into place by the Registry. This rule applies to all Registrars whether you are transferring to Nameway®, away from Nameway®, between any other two Registrars, or even between Nameway® accounts.

If you transfer to Nameway®, we cannot issue a refund for domains that transfer within the 45 day grace period. As the gaining registrar we are charged for that transfer. It is suggested you wait until 45 days have passed, and then transfer your domain to ensure you receive the additional year.

What do the definitions under "transfer status" mean?

Transfer request created - awaiting fax. User has created a fax transfer order and not yet sent the authorization fax into Nameway® (or we may not have entered it yet. Please allow 48 hours.)

Awaiting auto verification of transfer request. This status means that an auto verification order has been submitted and our system is in process of collecting the current whois data in order to verify the request.

Unable to retrieve current domain contacts from Whois. This means that our system was unable to automatically retrieve the whois data from the current registrar (when this occurs, the name is placed into a queue where it is to be manually verified.) We will verify and complete the request within 48 hours.

Auto verification of transfer request initiated. This status means that our transfer system has collected the current whois information for the domain name and sent out the verification email to the authorized contacts. This status will be displayed until the verification email is replied to, or closed if not received within the specified timeframe.

Domain transfer initiated and awaiting approval. This means that the transfer request has been verified by Nameway® and initiated for transfer with the global registry. This status is updated once the current registrar replies to the transfer request.

Cancelled - domain contacts did not response to verification e-mails. This means that the auto verification email that was sent out was not replied to by any of the authorized contacts.

Cancelled - domain contacts did not approve transfer of domain
This means that one of the contacts received the auto verification email and declined the transfer request.

Cancelled - Whois information provided does not match current registrant
This pertains to a fax transfer order. This means that the information provided when the order was created did not match the information in the current whois output.

Cancelled - Domain is currently not registered and cannot be transferred
This means that the domain name is not listed as a registered name and therefore cannot be transferred. You may encounter this status when attempting to transfer a domain that is expired.

Cancelled - Domain is locked at current registrar. This means that the current registrar for the domain has a lock in place that is preventing the domain from being transferred. When this occurs, you should contact the current registrar and request the lock be removed.

Cancelled - Transfer already initiated for this domain. A domain can only exist on one transfer order at a time. This status will appear on duplicate requests for the same domain name.

Cancelled - Transfer rejected by losing registrar. This means that Nameway® has verified and initiated the transfer request, but the current registrar has declined the request to transfer the name. When this occurs you should contact your current registrar to see if there is something more they need from you before they will be able to facilitate the transfer.

Cancelled - Transfer authorization fax not received. This will occur when a fax order is create, but the authorization fax is not sent in to verify the request. We hold fax orders open for up to 30 days. If the fax is not received within 30 days the order will be marked with this status.

Cancelled by customer. This means that the transfer order was cancelled through the user interface. A transfer order can only be cancelled prior to being initiated to the global registry. Once it has been initiated, it cannot be interrupted.

Awaiting manual fax verification. This means that the verification fax has been received and our system was not able to obtain the current whois data. When this occurs, the name is placed into a queue where it will be manually verified.

Transfer request not yet submitted. This means that a transfer order has been created by the user, but has not yet been submitted to our transfer database. If you go to "my transfers" in your account you can click on the order number and submit the order.

 [Top]
Will I be charged if the transfer fails? It looks like I was charged twice for a transfer.

You or your clients are not charged until the transfer is actually a success.
A pre-authorization for the total amount of the order is sent to the bank first. If one is looking at an online credit card statement, this pre-authorization can appear to be a charge, but it's not an actual charge yet.

When the transfer completes, a charge is then sent to the credit card company for payment. If it fails, we never send a charge against the pending pre-authorization request.

All banks differ in how long the pre-authorization stays on the card, but it will automatically be removed by the bank when they do not get a charge from us. We do not have a way to force your bank to release funds earlier than their policy dictates.
