I want to register a domain that you show as expired, but it says domain not available.

Expired domains are retained for the previous registrant to renew. You will have to wait approximately 77 days after expiration date before the domain is dropped and made available to the general public. Below is an explanation of the process in more detail:

In General:

After a domain expires, most registrars have a grace period of 1 - 45 days, during which time the previous registrant can reactivate the domain. Nameway®'s current grace period is 42 days; however, there is no guaranteed grace period, and this timeframe is subject to change without notice.

After the grace period, the domain is deleted from the registrar database.
The domain is held for an additional 30 days (Redemption Period) by the registry. Note: This only applies to .com, .net, and .org domain names.
This is followed by 5 more days (Pending Delete status), and will be dropped for anyone to purchase after that time.

To check a status of a domain go to: www.verisign-grs.com for .com and .net or www.pir.org for .org. Enter the domain in the whois search...it will tell you the status of the domain (i.e., Redemption Period). This will list the expiration date as well. The "updated date" is usually when the the 30 redemption period began.

My domain name expired and someone registered it with Nameway® as a new registration. How do I get my domain name back? Is Domain Dispute the only option?
You can contact the current registrant to see if they are interested in selling the domain to you. Many times they have purchased the domain but no longer intend to use it.

Should you even need to submit a formal dispute, please consult the ICANN policies you need to follow.

How do I buy an expired domain? How long do I have to wait to buy an expired domain?

While there is no guaranteed grace period, Nameway® will usually retain expired domains between 1-45 days. Typically we delete (drop) expired domains 40-42 days after expiration. We are unable to drop names prior to that time.

Domains in the Verisign Registry (this includes .com and .net) and the Public Interest Registry (.org) are held for an additional 35 days after Nameway® drops them (called the Redemption Period). Most other domains will become available as soon as they are dropped by Nameway®.

How long before my domain expires will you attempt to autorenew a domain?

If autorenewal is enabled on your domain the autorenewal system will attempt to renew your domain 30 days prior to expiration.

45 days prior to the expiration of your domain you will receive a notice to let you know that your domain will soon be expiring. This notice will indicate whether autorenewal is turned on for your domain so that you will be able to change this option, if necessary.

I received a notice that you were unable to automatically renew my domain name due to invalid credit card information, but I've checked and everything is correct. Why can't my domain name be renewed?

If you have updated your credit card information in response to a notice about a failed auto-renewal attempt, then we suggest that you attempt to manually renew the domain on our web site. This will instantly let you know if your changes were successful. If the transaction is still unsuccessful, the shopping cart may also present you with a more detailed error message that may help us to determine why the payment continues to fail.

Use the instructions below to manually renew your domain name. If you do receive an error message, please copy the exact text of that message and submit it to our technical support staff using the Request Help link in the support center. Be sure to also include your login ID and the domain name you were attempting to renew. This information will help us to get more details on the nature of the error and we may be able to assist you in completing the order.

To Renew Your Domain Name:

Log into your Nameway® account and click the "domain names" link in the left menu.
Click on "my domain"s and select the domain you wish to edit.
On the next page, click on the "add years" button and add the number of years desired*.
Click "add to cart" and proceed to checkout.
Verify that the information is correct and click purchase to complete the transaction.

Following are a few tips to ensure a successful renewal:

Check your expiration date. If it has been an entire year since your last payment to Nameway®, then it is possible that your bank has issued you a new card due to expiration. Make sure you've updated your account information with the new expiration date, even if the card number has not changed.

Check your billing address. Due to the high risk of fraudulent transactions, Nameway® has implemented an address verification system. This system will check your billing address against the information on file with your bank to ensure accuracy. If this information does not match then the order will not be accepted.

Look at your most recent bank or credit card statement to be sure that the billing address information associated with your credit card matches the address to which your statement has been sent.

While you will want to make this information match as closely as possible, there are a few things that you might want to leave out to make the address verification process go as smoothly as possible. Do not include your apartment number, suite number ,or any other additional numbers in your street address. Although this number may be present when your bank mails your statement, it is really only the street address itself that is used for address verification purposes (example: 1234 Main St. as opposed to 1234 Main St. Suite 567).
Remove any foreign characters. Try removing any non-english characters or symbols (such as # or &). Occasionally these types of characters have been known to cause inaccurate bank responses.

Check your Card Verification Code. Bank's have recently begun to require the 3-digit card verification code, located on the back of your Mastercard or VISA credit card (this is a 4-digit number on the front of an American Express card). Double-check to be sure that this number is present in your billing information. Often, this number can be faded and hard to read on the back of your card. If you have any doubt, contact your bank to verify the number.

If you have an older card that does not have a verification code on the back, please contact your bank for advice on what should be entered in this field.
If your country does not use Zip or Postal codes. Some countries do not use postal codes in their addresses. If your billing address is in one of these countries, simply enter NA in this field.

My website is gone and now you are the owner. What happened, how do I get my name back?

More than likely, your domain name has expired. When this happens, the domain is deactivated and no longer points to your website. We are the registrar for your name, but as the previous owner, you can still renew it.

Log into your account.
Click on "domain names".
Click the link "You have xxdomain names that have expired and need to be reactivated".

Once you reactive the domain, you need to enter DNS information.
While the domain is renewed, it can take up to 48 hours for the domain to become active again.

If you need instructions for entering DNS or pointing your domain, please see the "DNS and Nameservers" section for the Article to help you.

I'm trying to renew expired domains, but the page just refreshes.

It's possible the same names are on your Watch List (domain names menu option). If you have previously tried to purchase domains that were expired (using Register a List for example) and the domains were not available, they will be added to your Watch List. Remove (delete) them from your Watch List...then try to reactivate again.

You say my domain is expired, but the whois says it doesn't expire for another year. Which is right?

When a domain expires, the registrar is billed for the renewal of that domain. This allows the registrar to retain the domain in case it was an unintentional expiration. This allows the previous owner to have time to renew the domain. The name is expired as far as you (the previous registrant) are concerned because you haven't actually paid for that renewal. Technically you are no longer the owner, and the domain will become inactive - this includes email and your website will go down as well.

If the whois record indicates it has expired, and shows the "previous registrant' information, this means the registrant has not paid Nameway® for the renewal yet. It will still show next year's date, only because the registry has actually been paid for the renewal by Nameway®.

Once you pay Nameway® to renew the domain, it will be added back to your active list of domains, and it will no longer show as expired. Once an expired domains is renewed, it can take up to 48 hours to become active again. Please renew your domain before the actual expiration date to avoid unintentional expirations and down time.
